Reiki and the Healing Crisis
When we accumulate energy blockages, which we due, and begin to work with a healing modality, these blockages can be released quite rapidly. As the system rebalances, it must purge these old toxic energies. This rapid release can sometimes feel uncomfortable or even distressing, a phenomenon often referred to as a healing crisis.
Energy blockages are stored in various ways within our systems, and the experience of their release can differ from person to person and from situation to situation. Not everyone will go through a healing crisis, and even those who do may experience it differently each time. It’s also possible to have a healing crisis at one point in your life and an entirely different one later on.
Any therapy that moves energy within the body can trigger a healing crisis, such as massage, homoeopathy, or Reiki. You might experience a healing crisis after a treatment session with one of these methods or when you are first attuned to Reiki. While it may feel uncomfortable, a healing crisis is a positive sign that your system is responding to the treatment and beginning to heal. However, if you do not experience a healing crisis, there is no need to worry—healing can occur gently without dramatic symptoms.
Healing crises can manifest on three primary levels: physical, emotional/mental, and life situations. Typically, a healing crisis will occur on just one of these levels, though occasionally, minor symptoms may occur on a secondary level. No healing crisis should last longer than 48 hours—72 at the most—and there should never be signs of serious illness, such as a high fever. If symptoms fall outside these parameters, it is likely not a healing crisis, and medical attention should be sought.
Physical: A physical healing crisis manifests primarily in the body. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea (sometimes with vomiting), diarrhoea or soft stools, body aches, fatigue, and mild flu-like symptoms. A few people might experience a low-grade fever (a high fever is not a sign of a healing crisis and should be addressed by a medical professional). Some may have a mild sore throat or a brief cough, which quickly resolves. Increased urination is also a common effect of Reiki treatment, as the body works to flush out toxins. Ensuring the right amount of fresh drinking water will help to flush out the toxins. Using salt in your bathwater, swimming in wild water, and taking warm showers can all help bring balance back to all bodies.
Emotional/Mental: On this level, a healing crisis may bring up unprocessed emotions that must be cleared. You might find yourself crying unexpectedly or feeling the need to vocalise grief, anger, or sorrow through sounds such as wailing or even a primal scream. This release of emotions can feel as intense as giving birth, as these feelings have often been stored in the body for a long time. Old beliefs and thought patterns may also shift during this process, allowing you to see past issues in a new light. You might suddenly recall an old hurt and, with a fresh perspective, be able to forgive and let it go. Alternatively, you might have a moment of insight that allows you to release guilt or shame that you’ve carried for years. Sharing your pain and thoughts with the right people can help to release trauma and old pain.
Life Situation: Sometimes, starting on a healing path brings about significant shifts in your situation. You might be prompted to address long-overdue bills or face a relationship that reaches a crisis point, demanding change. A job that no longer serves you may shift in some way, or you might find that a doctor who hasn’t been helping you has moved away. Perhaps you’ll unexpectedly find yourself moving to a new city. These changes might seem minor initially, but they offer opportunities to clear out old ways of thinking and behaving that have created energetic blockages. While this type of healing crisis can sound daunting, it often opens up new paths for growth and change. Change can be frightening because it brings uncertainty, but if the old ways are causing harm or holding you back, a new direction may be just what you need for healing.
In my experience, allowing the body to rest and walk in nature is the best way forward.
Self-care, compassion for yourself, forgiveness for self, and most importantly – self-love.
“You did the best at the time with the knowledge you had”
“Let go of the past and live in the here and now”.
“For Today Only
Do not anger
Do not worry
Be humble
Be honest in your work
Be compassionate to yourself as you are to others”.
Much love
